What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical inbalance n the brain. I can result in extreme mood swings from manic highs to depression low.

Sometimes mood swings go from manic high to depressive low to happy feelings.

Types of Bipolar Disorder

  1. Bipolar Disorder 1

    • Has at least one sever episode of sever depression
  2. Bipolar Disorder 2

    • Never expericed full mania
    • Periods of high energy level
    • Alternate between depression and happy
  3. Cyclothymia(much milder version of bipolar)

    • Less sever mood swings

Causes of Bipolar

  • Life changes
  • Medications
  • Periods of sleeplessness
  • Use of Steroids

Symptoms

  • Easily distracted
  • little need for sleep
  • poor judgement
  • poor temper control
  • reckless behavior
  • lack of self control
  • binge eating, drinking and/or drug use
  • sex with many partners
  • spending sprees
  • very evelated moods
  • excess activity
  • increased energy
  • racing thoughts
  • talking a lot
  • suicidal thoughts
  • becoming antisocial

Signs and Tests

  • ask about your family history
  • ask your doctor about your recent mood swings
  • take a medical history exam

Treatment

There is no real treatment. There are medications and there is counceling.

  • valproate


  • anti-anxiety drugs

  • anti-depressants
